Finally my third high school goal I plan to end high school with a 3.8 Grade Point Average. I believe attendance is essential to a student understanding and success over all in school. This is my first goal. Attending school on a constant basis not only does great for your grades but also without you even noticing it builds in you a strong work ethic and discipline. The best part about attending school regularly is that you make awesome friends while your there. My second high school goal is to finish high school with my required 26 credits. This is very important to me because if I do not have these 26 credits I will not be able to go on to college. Now many students take this for granted and just don’t keep track about their grades. When it comes time to graduate and they cant graduate with their piers its not going to be so funny. If you don’t have enough credits to graduate and you find out I time. You can still fix the problem by just simply going to night school or take extra classes at your school. My third goal is the most important. That’s why I saved it for last. I have to maintain a Grade Point Average of a 3.8 or higher. This is very important to my future. This number is basically what makes or breaks you in a college application (aside from your S.A.T. scores). Having a good grade point average is critical in every student’s career as it opens doors for you with scholarships, grants, etc. In Conclusion, I believe that high school can be a very rewarding time for every young adult if managed properly. Remember to set tangible and  manageable goals for yourself. It is highly important for you not to set up goals that are out of your reach because when you do that. You are setting yourself up for disaster and failure.

The past is an undiscovered continent A Discussion with MartinAmis This past Sunday, I was fortunate to catch a reading and discussion with British novelist Martin Amis when he passed through town. Amis (author of Time’s Arrow, London Fields, Money, and more) was there to discuss his latest novel, Lionel Asbo: State of England. But what was advertised as a promotional stop on a book tour soon became so much more, as Amis touched on everything, eloquently bouncing from Mitt Romney to the Holocaust, and from Space Invaders to â€Å"chavs,† with so much in between. Read on for a taste of this master’s thoughts†¦ On how to be a novelist: Upon taking his seat before us, an awestruck audience of fanboys and girls, the author brushed over his hellos and immediately launched into unexpected and honest advice. In a total of three opening sentences, Amis remarked on the duties of both a voter in the upcoming presidential elections and on the novelist. A few choice comments about Romney, which I cannot repeat here, made his opinion on that front plainly known. Meanwhile, his comments on the role of an author were actually more astounding, given that he recited W. H. Auden’s â€Å"The Novelist† to expound on his thoughts. He preceded this with his opinion that the author must be grounded in his emotions; he must be ordinary to the point of banality. Then, of the poet, he recited, Encased in talent like a uniform, The rank of every poet is well known; They can amaze us like a thunderstorm, Or die so young, or live for years alone. Whereas the novelist, he continued, must†¦ Become the whole of boredom, subject to Vulgar complaints like love, among the Just  Be just, among the Filthy filthy too, And in his own weak person, if he can, Must suffer dully all the wrongs of Man. On aging: Amis transitioned from there into a topic that has pervaded his work lately: that of the ever-growing past. In fact, in person he spoke almost the exact words that appear at the beginning of his second-most recent novel, The Pregnant Widow: This is the way it goes. In your mid-forties you have your first crisis of mortality (death will not ignore me); and ten years later you have your first crisis of age (my body whispers that death is already intrigued by me). But something very interesting happens to you in between. As the fiftieth birthday approaches, you get the sense that your life is thinning out, and will continue to thin out, until it thins out into nothing. And you sometimes say to yourself: That went a bit quick Then fifty comes and goes, and fifty-one, and fifty-two. And life thickens out again. Because there is now an enormous and unsuspected presence within your being, like an undiscovered continent. This is the past. When we age, life, Amis says, becomes a retrospection of the past. After a certain age, you come to realize this is a good thing; the past is an undiscovered continent, which only you can visit. We fixate on memories, he said, but most especially  erotic memories. (Makes sense given that The Pregnant Widow  is the story of a man thinking back to his twenties, when the world was in the flux of the sexual revolution.) He continued, You think about how things went with women, how they went with children. Saul Bellow spoke to his friend on his death bed, I’ve been thinking. Now which is it? Is it: there goes a man or there goes a jerk?’ And his friend, Karl, said, ‘There goes a man.’ And Saul said, ‘OK. I’ll take your word for it.’ When you think about the fact that Bellow had five marriages and four children, you know that he wasnt thinking at that moment of his Nobel Prize, or his career. With the death of his close friend Christopher Hitchens last December, Amis has had more than his fair share of the weight of death on his mind. In a grave moment, the author touched on his friends passing, saying,  Ã¢â‚¬Å"Hitchens’ death was an unmitigated disaster But three weeks later,† he paused to knock on wood, â€Å"I inherited his love of life.† On the source of inspiration and the writing process: Amis said the best description for the first appearance of inspiration was Vladimir Nabokovsa throb. You wont know when or from where it will come to you, but the moment that you realize it has, an ache will start to pervade your body. And the most abstract ideas can awake a story within you; Amis referenced Nabokovs inspiration for writing Lolita as an example, which the Russian author famously described himself: The first little throb of  Lolita  went through me late in 1939 or early in 1940, in Paris somehow prompted by a newspaper story about an ape in the Jardin des Plantes, who, after months of coaxing by a scientist, produced the first drawing ever charcoaled by an animal: this sketch showed the bars of the poor creatures cage. You can almost see how Lolita could have come from that, Amis remarked, but still, its a large jump.  Clearly, inspiration is a mysterious beast. The author further mentioned of the creative writing process how his stepmotherhis father Kingsley Amis second wife, Elizabeth Jane Howardcouldnt begin a new novel without being able to write exactly what it was about on the back of an envelope. Amis, though he does not follow the exact same process, says he adopts this tactic when editing his final drafts. Anything that doesnt fulfill the purpose set out in that one sentence summary of the novel must be cut. From there, Amis read two excerpts from his newly published novel Lionel Asbo: State of England. The title gives two clues to the reader of what to expect. One is of the lead characters dispositionthe professional criminal at the heart of the story renamed himself after Britains notorious  Anti-Social Behaviour Order. The second is the admission that the novel, in Amis mind, encompasses the state of England today. Although, asked about what he thought of the countrys decline, Amis spoke with very little disdain. He argues that this decline is the natural result of the loss of Britains governance in the world, something that was never meant to be. And though the dark characters of his novels, like Lionel, appear distasteful and vulgar, he admitted that he loves every one of them in their own special way. Hearkening in theme to a Dickensian tale while drawing upon almost caricatured pop culture references, Lionel Asbo has already been hailed as the unintended sequel to Money. And that,  surely, seals this as a novel Martin Amis fans will not find disappointing. To make this work, leaders believed that the establishment of a base level of political and economic provisions for citizens would provide assurances of the foregoing. In order to implement such policies they had to be introduced on a national level through institutions and agencies that needed to be created to administer a uniform code of social and financial services. The preceding was a major factor in why social policy in Europe is more liberalized and generous than in the United States. World War II also resulted in an elimination and or erosion of historical European monarchies and the formation of constitutional frameworks reflective of20th century thinking. Chapter 4 Analysis of Data 4.1 Social Responsibility in Modern Society In order to understand the aspect(s) of social responsibilities with regard to their effect on the productivity of firms within the hospitality and catering sector of the travel and tourism industry classification, one must first be cognizant of the broader spectrum from which this emanates, social policies which evolve from public opinion. This is also termed as a social contract which is a term that has been derived from political science and sociology to signify both real as well as hypothetical understandings or agreements within country concerning the rights and responsibilities of citizens as well as the nation. As companies and corporations are an inherent part of the societal fabric they are bound by social codes of conduct and behaviour both legislated as well as those that are considered part of progressive thinking and behaviour. ‘What is John Proctor? I am no saint; for me it is fraud. I am not that man.† Explore Miller’s Presentation of Proctor in The Crucible. How far do you agree with Proctor’s Analysis of himself?  In 1962, Salem was affected dramatically by the tragedy of witchcraft. Miller use’s this hard-hitting occurrence to structure his story named ‘ The crucible’. By using a real event this can really affect the audience and influence them into picking up more understanding of the play and the happenings that are involved, hence the fact that witchcraft does not seem like a fully believable event. Miller uses the 1692 Salem witchcraft trials to symbolize the 1950s anti-Communist purges. The events of the 1692 Salem witch trials mostly parallel those of the McCarthy trials. If you opposed the McCarthy investigations, you were accused of being a communist. If you opposed to the Salem Witch trials, you were accused of being a witch. Those accused suffered great consequences in both the Crucible and the McCarthy trials. As the McCarthy trials were still currently going through during the release of this play it made the play more effective and easier to relate to. Miller uses clever dramatic devices and a range of different techniques that help engage the audience and manipulate them into siding with different characters in the play and collecting important data that will help with understanding of the alternate people mentioned. The language and stage directions he uses create tension throughout the play and this all builds up to an unpredictable ending, which the audience has been lead on to throughout the play. As soon as Proctor makes his entrance his type of personality is immediately familiar with the audience via the stage directions. It reads on page 16 â€Å"Enter John Proctor. On seeing him Mary Warren leaps in fright† this creates the audience to comprehend that Proctor must have quite a overpowering character that outputs into Mary Warren having such a dramatic reaction to his presence. The first sign the audience receives of an altered relationship between Proctor and Abigail is when the stage directions read ‘ Abigail has stood as though on tiptoe, absorbing his presence, wide-eyed’ this creates an atmosphere of tension between the couplet and builds up to understanding of her blatant feelings for Proctor. But the stage directions read that he only ‘Glances’ at her, an act that makes it obvious that he does not seem to return her feelings for him, as he only carelessly ‘Glances’ as her whereas she seems to be love struck by his presence. The first line that them two communicate is Abigail saying ‘ Gah! I’d almost forgot how strong you are John Proctor!’ The word ‘Forgot’ instantaneously confirms the fact that there has been a past between the couple, which the audience can only wait to be informed certainly of. The following script after this quotation confirms the audiences suspicions by Proctor and Abigail discussing the relationship that they once had, and Abigail attempting unsuccessfully to rebuild a relationship only by Proctor turning her down firmly. Proctor’s relationship with Elizabeth is first introduced at the beginning of Act 2. When Elizabeth delivers Proctor his dinner, it reads that â€Å"She watch’s him eat† and when he compliments her cooking she â€Å"blush’s with pleasure†. I think this activity shows that Elizabeth is very keen on pleasing Proctor. The audience already know at this point of the extramarital affair that Proctor had with Elizabeth betraying his wife. So at the beginning of act 2 I pick up that Elizabeth is attempting greatly to hang onto their marriage even with their tinted history. As of their history there must be a decent amount of tension between the both and mistrust going on discretely. Proctor is portrayed as a good man but who has made very somewhat foolish mistakes in his past, which he tries to almost block out. When Elizabeth mentions his past betrayal in act two Proctor declares â€Å"I have not moved from here to there without I think to please you† I think this shows his immense remorse and that he truly is a good man at heart. In Act 1 when Proctor is questioned why he does not attend church anymore he replies; â€Å"I have trouble enough without I come five mile to hear him preach only hellfire and bloody damnation. Take it to heart, Mr Parris. There are many others who stay away from church these days because you hardly ever mention God anymore† this proves that he opposes the expenditures of Parris in the church and felt that the church was becoming too materialistic and drifted away from the original purpose of a church under the influence of Parris. When Parris states that there is â€Å"a faction and a party against him and all authority† Proctor states that he must join it. This declaration shocks everyone, as it is an offence to join such an anti-authority clique. This shows the extent of Proctor and Parris’s mutual hatred. His relationship with Parris tells me that he is one of a type whom stands up for his own view and does not delay to express his views. During the majority of Act 2 we are introduced with the dilemma of Elizabeth being accused of witchcraft. Both Proctor and Elizabeth know factually that its Abigail’s vengeful plotting that has got Elizabeth into this shocking situation. The audience already knows by now that Abigail is still madly love-struck with Proctor so they understand that it’s Abigail attempting to get rid of Elizabeth in hoping that she could take her place. If Proctor had not gone through with the past affair in the first place Elizabeth would not have ever been accused so in Proctor’s eyes its his fault and as a normal being he knows he now has to get his wife out of this situation on top of the fact that its his role as a husband to care for her and to keep her absent from upset. When Proctor attempts to influence Mary Warren into testifying in court on his behalf she informs him of the problem that Elizabeth will expose him of his lechery. Proctor states; â€Å"Good, then her saintliness is done with. We will slide together into our pit† this line shows his major courage and that he will risk his pure stainless name for his wife, a sign of trust and heroic behaviour. At this point his selfless motive is to get his wife out of the darkness of the court even if it does risk his name, or if worst comes to worse his life. As Mary Warren has informed Proctor of the girls pretence in court he sets out to relieve the court of their manipulative acts and to output in many more lives being saved, another heroic act.  In conclusion I think that Proctor’s analysis of himself is somewhat false as throughout the play he has shown signs of heroic occurrences and he has realised of his past mistakes and felt regret.
